No Body

“No body, no crime.”

He said that to reassure me as we rowed across the lake. Really there was no crime anyway; it was an accident. A strange accident nobody would’ve believed, but, honestly, an accident. I guess that doesn’t matter now, since no one ever found it. No body, no crime.

So much time spent waiting for it to be found anyway. The dread, the anticipation. It nearly killed him, but I held together. The feeling was a million times greater than what I used to get at the casino after pulling the slot machine lever, waiting to find out just how lucky I was. I’m glad I’m over my gambling problem now. It was ruining my life.

No body, no crime, so it’s a shame he let it eat away at him anyway. A shame he’s gone now, but what can we do? They never found his body.
